Nice, well-made product
When I accidentally smashed my other Sony HGZ1 camera mic, I wanted to upgrade to something nicer. The HST1 turned out to be a good choice. It's more compact but it still swivels 180 degrees for self-narration shots. Sony built-in a little bit of give so that if you nudge the mic, it tilts from the base...great if you or someone else accidentally bumps into it, it won't crack or break. Add On Microphone necessary for musical performance
I tried using my new Sony DCR SR40 to record Church orchestra performances and services and compared it to my Sony DCR TRV 900. I found quickly that I needed this new Sony ECMHST1 after comparing the sound quality to my old trv 900. Comparing the 2 cameras now with the new attached microphone, I can't tell the difference. It is a necessity for recording music or any performance from a distance with the Sony DCR SR40

Does the Job
I bought it for my Sony HC7 to reduce the camera noise picked up on the tape. It doesn't eliminate the noise but there's a drastic reduction. The noise can only be heard when there's nothing going on noise wise.
