30 Aug 2008Nikon D40x - problemsI bought this camera 7 months ago to replace a Pentax SLR film camera. I am not pleased with my purchase. The autofocus is frequently ineffective, and I have had hundreds of shots ruined by uneven focusing. I now do not use autofocus, but manual, and I always shoot two shots of the same scene to ensure that at least one of them is in focus.
The 6-point focus of other cameras appears to work better....–vrystaatfrom Amazon.com
27 Aug 2008Great Value CameraFor the price, this is a fine camera. The 10 Megapixel sensor takes excellent images - and the camera is small and lightweight.
I purchased this body, and added the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED Lens. Nice lens and with this body is a better value than the Canon XTi in my opinion - even these less expensive the Nikon lenses are better than the Canon lenses, and certainly the poor kit lens that the Canon XTi comes with.
I really want a Nikon D300, but that was not...–Andrew M. Somersfrom Amazon.com
13 Aug 2008Great CameraThis as a great camera and is fine for all but the most sophistocated amateur or pro user who will naturally have a D3–fiddlerfrom Amazon.com
"The D40x retains all the things that are likeable about the D40 and gives you a 10mp sensor that produces images that are arguably slightly better than the D80 can produce (at least for JPEG files). You pay for that extra resolution two ways: extra dollars up front and reduced flash flexibility due to the all-mechanical shutter. I don't expect to use my D80 much any more with the D40x being smaller and lighter. But someone with older AF lenses or who needs one of the D80's additional features might choose differently."
"Here's the latest engine swap in DSLRs: The entry-level 6MP Nikon D40 got a 10MP image sensor to become the D40x, putting it in the race with such cost-cutter ten-shooters as the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi and Sony Alpha 100."
The souped-up version of Nikon's D40x SLR offers better dust control, more powerful RAW-to-JPEG conversion, Active D-lighting, and a host of other enhancements.
