The 8 MP Olympus Evolt E-500 (kit w/ 14-45mm lens) uses Four Thirds lenses. It uses xD Picture Card/Microdrive/CompactFlash memory cards, and its CCD resolution is 3264 x 2448. The Olympus Evolt E-500 has a 2.5" LCD screen (measured along the diagonal) on the back for composing pictures, and you can manually adjust the shutter & aperture. Its fastest shutter speed is 1/4000 second, up to a maximum exposure time of 60 seconds, and you can shoot 2.5 frames/second continuously. It has a built-in internal flash as well as a self timer. Big, bright, sharp viewfinder makes this a joy to use...
Not much to add except that my BF, who got a Nikon at twice the price, is jealous of the results I'm getting with my E-500 -- great sharpness, easy-to-master controls, overall a winner for serious amateurs....

an excellent camera, but with long-term issues
I bought a slightly used (display model) Olympus E-500 2.5 years ago and have been extremely happy with the results. The battery life continues to be excellent even after constant use (almost daily for 2.5 years). The picture quality is excellent, even with flash in low light (but not very low light) conditions.
In search of something more then P&S
While searching for a camera with the best price/performance the film experience with Olympus cameras tipped the scales to Olympus as a next possible purchase for a digital camera. Having gone through all available reviews available at the time a DSLR purchase was considered above a P&S. This purchase has opened a whole new experience and learning on digital photography and photography with SLR in general.
