4 of these failed in less than a year
I had 2 of these fail in the last year, and their 2 replacements after them (used with 3 different machines in 2 different locations). Surely not coincidence, simply a faulty product. And what does LaCie do? Replace them with a refurbished version of the same product that will continue to fail, but no longer be under warranty. I'm switching to Seagate....

LaCie external drives fail in their second year
I've had it with LaCie. My fifth external LaCie drive has just failed. I love the physical design of these drives -- they look great -- and, to be honest, that is the main reason that I stuck with LaCie through these failures. First I had two 500GB drives. When each of these failed I replaced them in turn with 1TB drives. When each of these failed I replaced them with 1TBs again. Now one of those replacements has failed after only 13 months. did not work well with my mac using esata
when I would use this drive with the esata it would go to sleep and not come back. This caused my computer to crash. I went through 2 drives before I gave up. It worked better through USB but I need something faster for my hd videos.
