Mine works well
I bought one of these for my HTPC, which seems like a perfect use for it. The drive offers a balance between performance and power consumption, plus it is very quiet.
You should know that this drive is not intended to be as fast as a true 7200rpm drive; power savings and quieter operation result from taking the speed down. If performance is more important, there are faster 1TB drives; look elsewhere.
In installed mine and it worked perfectly, and still does, as I expected it woul...

When it works!
First drive failed Diagnostics. Second drive from WDC, not the Vendor, was DOA (Drive was referbished, and just off the (re)assembly line. If you yell loud enough, WDC will swap out a NEW one not another referb. As they say, Third time is a charm. Works great, saves power. I don't notice the reduced performance over a straight 7200 RPM Drive. The Vendor was not to blame in any way for the drive problems. WDC needs to clean up their act, quality control is very poor on these drives.

Nice hard drive
Bought three of these and threw them into a hotswap backplane with another 500 i had laying around. Set them up in a Raid 5 with 1 hot spare.
I'm not sure if i am realizing the energy saving benefits of the variable RPM's on this drive. My raid controller may not be letting them spin down while idle. Hard to tell. Either way if your dealing with minimal amounts of power in my opinion. Unless your dealing with a data center or your a complete green freak your really not saving alot of watt...
