Modest
I purchased this set because I was upgrading from a stereo system to true surround sound. The center channel sounds excellent for mid and high ranges that include voice, but when there are other sounds such as loud booms or traffic, it gets a little bit murky with lower frequencies, but that can be expected, as the center channel is intended for midranges. The two back surrounds sound great, but they are very small, and don't put out a whole lot of power (I do have my rear channels set at +6dB, ...

Good for small home theater
I got these speakers to complete my home theater system, which consists of the Sony SS-F5000 floorstanding speakers and a 12 inch Velodyne sub. So far, they seem to work fine and don't have any noticeable distortion. One thing I noticed, however, is that the surrounds don't go very loud. Luckily, my receiver has a built in channel adjustment so that I can increase the volume. Still, even with that adjustment, they probably wouldn't be loud enough for a larger setup. Just not enough oomph...
I recently purchased a set of Sony SS-CR3000 Center and rear speakers for around $75.00. They sound clear but lack the power I was looking for in my 7.1 sound system upgrade. They are fine for a small bedroom or dorm room but not for a larger space or system. Also, they would be better for a 5.1 system and not a 7.1. Even if you manually overdrive them, they don't have enough range to make a difference. They do have built in wall hangers which are nice. I had to screw in wall hanger mounts...
