Pleasantly surprised
I've used the same couple of cheap but dependable Radio Shack irons since I was about 12. Now 17 years later, I needed something smaller and more temperature controllable for working with lead-free solder and smaller parts.

Perfect for the serious hobbyist
This soldering station has been a dream. The adjustable temp is very accurate. One can see the temp. drop a little when the tip is heating material, especially with a heat sink. I needed an iron with decent temp. range for motherboard repair work. The low end of this unit is far more than adequate for that. The high end is great for quickly heating objects with greater mass.
